🏮 The Chinese Painter Parable

Marcel Dadi story

Once upon a time, long ago, in a province of the distant kingdom of China, there lived a painter who could draw with a single brush stroke: water lilies, birds, forests, rocks, waves, and clouds.

His genius was so great that his fame soon spread beyond his village, crossing the borders of his province, until one day it reached the ears of the emperor.

The emperor summoned him to his palace.

The Emperor: "They say you are the best painter in my empire and I want to be sure of this. I therefore order you to paint me a swan, that never have my eyes seen a more beautiful swan in this world, and I will make you the richest man in the country. How long will you need?"

The Painter: "Ten years, my lord."

The Emperor: "Ten years for a swan?"

The Painter: "Ten years for a beautiful swan, my lord."

The Emperor: "Very well," said the emperor impassively. "I accept; and I will come myself to collect it. In ten years to the day."

Ten years passed...

The emperor returned on the appointed day, and the painter was waiting for him, brush in hand.

The Painter: "My lord, the swan you commissioned from me."

And with a single brush stroke, in just a few seconds, the artist made appear on the silk a swan of such perfect beauty that the emperor was struck speechless with admiration.

Coming to his senses, he looked at the painter and said:

The Emperor: "This swan is of unparalleled beauty, but tell me: if it took you only a few seconds to draw it, why did you ask for ten years?"

Without a word, the painter took the emperor by the hand and led him to a room adjacent to his workshop...

In this room hung ten thousand swans!
